Clamdiggers Drill Team
In September 1923, Hose Company 3 purchased a Packard Truck for use by the Tournament Team, which was sold in in 1927 for $150 ending their Motorized Team.
The Clamdiggers remained very competitive throughout the years in department sports including the Annual Volleyball Tournament as well as running in Old Fashioned Tournaments for many years before taking a break.
2010 The return of the Clamdiggers
The Clamdiggers Drill Team returned to the track in 2010 after a long hiatus to run in the Nassau County Old Fashioned Tournament. For many team members it was the first time they had ever run in a tournament. Even though there were some expected speed bumps along the way the team managed to receive times in a couple of events and held on to fifth place in Running Hose Replacement until a team getting rerun knocked the Clamdiggers out of the points on the last run of the event.
2010 2nd Battalion Champs!
51 years to the day after the scorecard seen below was filled out the Clamdiggers returned to Fireman's Field in Baldwin to compete in the 2nd/3rd/4th Battalion Drill. In only their second tournament back on the track the Clamdiggers staged a dramatic comeback to become the 2010 Second Battalion Champions and take 5th Place overall on the day!
2010 NYS Old Fashioned Tournament
Returning to the New York State Old Fashioned Tournament for the first time in a number of years the Clamdiggers put forth a respectable effort. Competing against the best teams in the state the Clamdiggers managed to secure a fourth place finish in 2 into 1. The Clamdiggers also sat in fifth place in buckets until the last team kept the team from securing points by less than a second. Considering the experience level and level of competition this was another successful day for the tournament team.
2010 Keith Fairben Drill - Floral Park
It was not the best of days weather wise for the 2010 Fairben drill in Floral park but the Clamdiggers did manage to come away from the day with some hardware. In stark contrast to the way the season began in Running Ladder the Clamdiggers took 5th place with a 9.57. In the very next event the team pulled off a second place finish in Running Hose. That was it for the points on the day and for the season. The Clamdiggers ended the day in 8th place out of the 15 teams competing on the day.
2011 Lynbrook Invitational
Saturday June 11, 2011 was the annual Lynbrook Old Fashioned tournament. Rain forced the cancellation of Three Man Ladder and Running Ladder. Once the weather lifted a little hose events were run normally. The Clamdiggers took home four points in their first tournament of the year. A 12.93 in Running Hose was good for fifth place, while a 27.33 was good for third in efficiency replacement. Both of those times represented the best times that the Clamdiggers have run since the team reformed before last season.
2011 2nd Battalion Tournament
June 24, 2011 the Clamdiggers returned to the track looking to defend their 2010 2nd Battalion title. Although it was a rough night for the Clamdiggers they managed to take times in every event and take fourth place in the Battalion.
2011 Nassau County Old Fashioned Tournament
Friday July 8, 2011 was the Nassau County Old Fashioned tournament in Hicksville. The Clamdiggers bounced back from a rough performance last time out in Rockville Centre to take 5 points on the day and finish in 8th place. The Clamdiggers finished in third place in Running Ladder and in fourth place in Efficiency, both events marked the best times the team has put up since their return to the track in 2010. Additionally, an 8.16 in 3 Man Ladder was also a team best since 2010.
2011 NYS Old Fashioned Tournament
On Friday August 6, 2011 the Clamdiggers returned to the track in the New York State Old Fashioned Championship in Merrick. The Clamdiggers started off strong picking up a fourth place finish in Three Man Ladder and a fifth place finish in Running Ladder. Solid runs in Running Hose and Running Hose Replacement (6th place) yielded no points. Efficiency saw the Clamdiggers take third place bringing the total points for the tournament to six. Another sixth in 2 into 1 and a 7th in buckets rounded out the day.
At the end of the day the Clamdiggers finished with 6 points (three times the points they ended the 2010 states with) and finished in 7th place overall out of 18 teams. Since the team returned to the track for the 2010 season, the State tournament included the best times yet in 3 man ladder, running ladder, running hose, running hose replacement, and 2 into 1. Progress...
2012 2nd Battalion 6/24/12
The Clamdiggers returned to the track on Sunday June 24, 2012 for the 2nd Battalion Drill at North Woodmere. The Clamdiggers roster is thinner than in years past thanks to work schedules that have prevented practices. So without any practice on the year the Clamdiggers took to the track with three new members. The day started out well as the Clamdiggers took first in individual ladder. With only a handful of teams running in the tournament from the 2nd Battalion the goal for each event was to finish (not get hurt) and take points. The team ended up taking points in six of the seven events that they participated in. At the end of the day the Clamdiggers had pulled together enough points to take third place in the 2nd Battalion.
2012 NYS Old Fashioned
It was not a banner night for the Clamdiggers at the 2012 State Old Fashioned Tournament by any stretch of the imagination. The team was running shorthanded with little practice and several members running in unfamiliar positions but they were out there none the less giving it all they had. Aside from the equipment malfunctions, members flying through the air, and overall bad luck everything else went all right.
