Fatal fire in an apartment building on N Bergen Place.

On Thursday Morning, January 28th, the Freeport Fire Department responded to a call for smoke in a 4 story apartment building on N Bergen Place. No conditions were visible for first arriving units Engine 216 and Chief Colgan. Ladder 218 forced the door to a first floor apartment locating the fire in a bathroom. Engine stretched 1 line to extinguish the fire and a second line as backup. The occupant of the apartment was found severely burned at the source of the fire. There was no extension to other apartments.

One Freeport FD member, Alberiro Gonzalez, who lived in the building and was home recovering from a broken foot injury operating at an alarm during Blizzard Jonas, suffered smoke inhalation hobbling through the building warning residents of the fire.

62 members of the Freeport FD responded under the command of Chief VanCott. Mutual aid from Baldwin, Oceanside, Merrick and North Merrick FD were called in as FAST Teams and standby for additional alarms in Freeport.
